Naval vessels are designed for worldwide operation. It is important to keep the climate onboard of the vessel within a tight range. This is the function of the heating, ventilation and cooling system (HVAC). In order to design the system, an engineer considers each of the 200+ spaces in the vessel separately, taking into account the requirements per space, making these calculations very labor intensive. The aim of this study case is to suggest a ‘lumped-element’ method to reduce the number of spaces. By analyzing the space requirements as a whole, the optimal way for lumping is to be found.
